Epidemiology of hepatitis A, B, and C viruses and HIV virusamongpatientsundergoingpre-operativesurgeryat Al-FuratAl-AwsatTeachingHospital
Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis A, B and C viruses testing is advised before optional surgeries according to national standards in many nations in order to lower the risk of these viruses being transmitted through a needle stick or cutting lesion. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of HAV, HBsAg, anti-HCV and HIV viruses among preoperative patients undergoing surgery at Al-Furat Al-Awsat Teaching Hospital. Methods: This cross section study was conducted on patients who had elective surgery in the surgical section at Al-Furat Al-Awsat Teaching Hospital between July to October of 2023. For preoperative patients, information on the medical background of the patients as well as the results of the viral testing were obtained. Result: In the study's total of 447 data was collected from patients who undergone elective surgery, the outcomes of preoperative viral screening were investigated. It was found that positive rate for HAV 5.3 % (24 of 447) , HBV 2.4 % (11 of 447), HCV 0.6 % (3 of 447), without presence of HIV virus. There were 131 (29.3 %) males and 316 (70.7 %) females, with ages ranging from 10 or lower to above 70 year old. The age group with the highest percentage was 21–30 of HAV and HBV, whereas age groups (31–40) and (41–50) of HAV, HBV, and HAV had analogous distributions. When compared to groups (61 and 70) that showed no prevalence of any viral infections, the age group of 70 and above had the lowest HBV score. Ages 10 and under only exhibited HAV, whereas age groups 20 to 29 revealed positive prevalence of HAV, HBV, and HAV. Conclusion : The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of HAV, HBsAg, anti-HCV and HIV viruses among preoperative patients undergoing surgery at Al-Furat Al-Awsat Teaching Hospital
