A Retrospective Study on Predominance and Drug Utilization Review among Coronary Artery Disease (Cad) Patients Prescribed With Hmg-Coa Reductase Inhibitors in a Multispeciality Hospital
Drug use evaluation (DUE) is a system of on-going, systematic, criteria-based evaluation of drug use that will help ensure that medicines are used appropriately. DUE is classified as prospective, concurrent and retrospective. STATINS, also known as HMG-CoA REDUCTASE INHIBITORS, are a class of lipid-lowering medications that reduce illness and mortality in those who are at high risk of cardiovascular disease. They are the most common cholesterol-lowering drugs. Coronary artery disease (CAD), also called coronary heart disease (CHD), ischemic heart disease (IHD), or simply heart disease, involves the reduction of blood flow to the heart muscle due to build-up of plaque (atherosclerosis) in the arteries of the heart. Medication compliance, adherence and the patient outcomes are evaluated. Objective: A retrospective study to assess the predominance and drug utilization review among patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) who were prescribed with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors or statins. Methodology: A retrospective observational study was conducted for 150 patients and their records from 2019 -2020 were included in this study based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The case records were reviewed and evaluated on the basis of gender, age, types of coronary artery disease, and various measures to assess these diseases, drugs prescribed, drug utilization patterns and Patient‟s outcome data were collected. The collected data was entered and analyzed by using SPSS Software. Graphical representation was used for visual interpretation of the analyzed data. Result: A total of 150 patients were included in our study. A majority of them were males (68%). It was seen that adult above the age of 56 years (84%) were the major victims. The maximum number of CAD cases were reported due to myocardial infarction (32%) followed by stroke (25.3%). It was observed that maximum CAD cases were attributed due to high cholesterol (21%) and high blood pressure (15%). Patients were observed and their medication therapy was evaluated. Conclusion: The most common cause of CAD was found to be myocardial infarction. Atorvastatin and Rosuvastatin were the most frequently used statins and majority of the patients in our study were managed by appropriate measures. HMG- CoA reductase inhibitors or statins followed by Anti-anginal agents were the most frequently prescribed drugs. Awareness and proper education on the risk factors of CAD among the population may help to reduce the concurrent occurrence of diseases.
