Vision is a vital sense impacting daily life, and awareness of common eye conditions is crucial for maintaining eye health. This study assessed the knowledge and awareness of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia among the general population in District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, India. Methods: A cross-sectional survey collected data from 400 adults using a structured questionnaire. The study evaluated demographic information, knowledge of common eye conditions, and related factors. Data analysis was performed using Epi Info V7. Results: The study found varying levels of knowledge among participants. While many recognized myopia (50.75%) and presbyopia (47.25%), understanding of hyperopia (46.5%) and astigmatism (43.25%) was lower. Notably, 71.75% understood the risks of neglecting these conditions, and 68.5% were aware of lifestyle factors contributing to them. Approximately 58.5% believed eyeglasses or contact lenses could correct these conditions. However, only 34.5% had undergone an eye examination, and 32.25% knew the recommended frequency for check-ups. Importantly, 51.25% expressed ideas to improve community awareness. Conclusion: While there is moderate knowledge about common eye conditions in District Kangra, opportunities for enhancing awareness, especially concerning hyperopia and astigmatism, exist. Promoting eye health education and increasing access to eye care services can improve visual health outcomes in the community. Early detection and intervention are essential to preserving vision.
Vision is a fundamental sense that profoundly influences our daily lives. The ability to see clearly, without discomfort or limitations, is essential for tasks ranging from reading to recognizing loved ones. Common eye conditions, such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia, can significantly impact an individual's visual acuity and quality of life. Understanding these eye conditions and their prevalence among the general population is crucial for promoting eye health and preventing visual impairment [1-2].
Myopia, characterized by difficulty seeing distant objects clearly, is a prevalent eye condition worldwide, with a rising incidence, particularly in younger populations. Hyperopia, where close objects appear blurred, is another common refractive error affecting many individuals. Astigmatism, marked by distorted or blurred vision at all distances, is often associated with irregular corneal shape. Presbyopia, an age-related condition, makes it challenging to focus on near objects and typically affects individuals over the age of 40 [1-4].
The District Kangra in Himachal Pradesh, India, is a region known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage. In such communities, awareness and knowledge about common eye conditions are essential for early detection, timely intervention, and the preservation of visual health. While eye care services are available in the district, a significant portion of the population may not be well-informed about these conditions, their causes, and the importance of regular eye examinations.
This study aims to bridge the knowledge gap regarding common eye conditions in the District Kangra. By assessing the levels of awareness and understanding of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia among the general population, we intend to shed light on the prevalence of these conditions and identify areas where eye health education and awareness campaigns may be beneficial.
Public awareness about eye health plays a crucial role in preventing vision impairment and promoting timely treatment. The results of this study will not only serve as a baseline for understanding the current state of knowledge about common eye conditions in District Kangra but will also inform strategies to enhance eye care awareness and improve visual health outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
The objective of this study is to gauge the levels of awareness and knowledge about Common eye conditions such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia etc. among the general population of District Kangra,Himachal Pradesh
Research Approach: Descriptive
Research Design: Cross-sectional survey design
Study Area: District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh
Study Duration- between April 2023 to July 2023
Study Population: The study's target population encompassed all adults aged 18 and above who had been residents of District Kangra for a minimum of 12 months
Sample Size: A robust sample size of 400 adults was determined using a 95% confidence level, an estimated knowledge level of 50% regarding Common eye conditions , a precise 5% absolute error margin, and a conservative 5% non-response rate
Study Tool: A google form questionnaire consisting of questions regarding socio-demography and knowledge regarding Common eye conditions was created. The questionnaire was initially pre-tested on a small number of participants to identify any difficulty in understanding by the respondents
Description of Tool
Demographic Data Survey Instrument: The demographic form elicited information on participants’ background: age, marital status, religion, employment, education and many more
Questionnaire: The questionnaire contains 20 structured knowledge related questions regarding Common eye conditions. One mark was given for each correct answer and zero for incorrect answer. The maximum score was 20 and minimum score was zero. Scoring was done on the basis of marks as >80% (16-20) = very good, 60-79% (12-15) = Good, 41-59% (8-11) = Fair, <40% (< 8) = poor
Validity of Tool: By the experts in this field
Data Collection: Data was collected under the guidance of supervisors. The google form questionnaire was circulated among the residents of District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh for responses using online modes like e-mail and social media platforms like Whatsapp groups, Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin till the 400 responses were collected.
Data Analysis: Data was collected and entered in Microsoft excel spread sheet, cleaned for errors and analyzed with Epi Info V7 Software with appropriate statistical test in terms of frequencies and percentage.
Ethical Considerations: Participants confidentiality and anonymity was maintained.
The primary objective of this study was to gauge the understanding of Common eye conditions among the general population of District Kangra. A total of 400 participants took part in the study, with 271 (67.75%) residing in urban areas and 129 (32.25%) in rural areas (Table 1).

In the present study 24.5% (98) participants had very good knowledge (16-20 marks) towards, Common eye conditions 25.5% (102) had good knowledge (12-15 marks), 33.5% (134) had fair knowledge (8-11 marks) and 16.5% (66) having poor knowledge (<8 marks) (Figure 1).

This study aimed to assess the levels of awareness and knowledge concerning common eye conditions among the general population of District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. The findings provide valuable insights into the understanding of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia in this region and offer opportunities for enhancing eye health education and awareness campaigns.
The study revealed varying levels of knowledge among the participants regarding common eye conditions. While a significant percentage demonstrated fair knowledge, there were also notable gaps in understanding, particularly in identifying the signs and symptoms associated with these conditions.
Nearly half of the participants (47.25%) demonstrated awareness of presbyopia and its typical onset in a person's life. This suggests a reasonably good understanding of age-related vision changes, which is vital as presbyopia affects a significant portion of the population, particularly those over 40 years [3,4].
A substantial percentage (50.75%) could explain what myopia is and how it affects vision. This level of awareness is significant, considering the global prevalence of myopia and its impact on visual acuity [5-6]. Over half of the participants (51.25%) were aware of common symptoms associated with myopia. Recognizing these symptoms, such as blurred distance vision, is essential for early detection and seeking appropriate eye care services.
Nearly half of the respondents (46.5%) could describe hyperopia and its effects on eyesight. This indicates a moderate level of understanding, although further education could be beneficial to increase awareness. A similar percentage (47%) recognized the usual signs of hyperopia. Enhancing knowledge about hyperopia is essential, as individuals with this condition may not be aware of its presence until they experience visual discomfort.
Approximately 43.25% of participants described astigmatism and its effects on vision. Astigmatism is a common condition, and improving awareness about its characteristics is important for early diagnosis and management [3-4]. A similar percentage (43%) could identify signs or symptoms of astigmatism. Increased awareness can prompt individuals to seek corrective measures, such as eyeglasses or contact lenses.
A substantial number (47.75%) recognized noticeable signs or symptoms of presbyopia. This is encouraging, as presbyopia is often mistaken for other eye conditions, and early detection is crucial for appropriate intervention [5,6].
The majority of participants (58.5%) believed that common eye conditions could be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses. This understanding aligns with standard vision correction methods and emphasizes the importance of eyewear in managing these conditions. Half of the participants (50.75%) were aware of non-invasive treatments or exercises that can help manage common eye conditions. This knowledge is valuable, as it highlights alternatives to vision correction and encourages proactive eye care.
A significant number of respondents (71.75%) understood the potential risks of not addressing common eye conditions. This awareness underscores the importance of timely diagnosis and appropriate interventions to prevent visual impairment and related complications. A notable percentage recognized the roles of genetics (26.75%) and age-related factors (48%) in the development of common eye conditions. Acknowledging these factors is crucial for individuals to understand their susceptibility and take proactive measures for eye health.
Approximately one-third (34.5%) reported having had an eye examination to check for common eye conditions. This indicates a need for increased access to eye care services and regular check-ups, particularly given the prevalence of these conditions. A significant number (32.25%) knew the recommended frequency for eye check-ups, especially as one gets older. This knowledge is vital for individuals to maintain their visual health over time.
A substantial majority (68.5%) were aware of lifestyle factors that might increase the risk of developing common eye conditions. This awareness highlights the role of lifestyle modifications in eye health and prevention. A portion of respondents (22.75%) reported using eye care products or technologies to alleviate symptoms related to common eye conditions. This indicates a proactive approach to managing eye health but also suggests that more individuals could benefit from such interventions.
A notable number (26.75%) could name local or community resources that offer information or support related to eye health in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. This knowledge reflects the presence of accessible eye health services and information within the community.Over half of the participants (51.25%) expressed opinions on improving awareness about common eye conditions in their community. These insights can inform targeted awareness campaigns and educational initiatives tailored to the specific needs and preferences of the local population.
These findings align with previous research on public awareness and knowledge of eye conditions, emphasizing the importance of tailored education and outreach programs [5-8]. While knowledge levels vary, the study highlights the potential for improvement in understanding common eye conditions and the necessity of early detection and intervention.
This study provides a comprehensive assessment of awareness and knowledge regarding common eye conditions among the general population of District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. While there is a reasonable level of understanding, particularly regarding myopia and presbyopia, there are opportunities for enhancing awareness, particularly concerning hyperopia and astigmatism.
Promoting eye health education and increasing access to eye care services can further improve visual health outcomes in the community. By addressing knowledge gaps and emphasizing the importance of regular eye examinations, individuals can better understand their eye health needs and take proactive measures to preserve their vision.
