Abstract

The perception of patients regarding the importance of the Pathology Department is a vital aspect of healthcare delivery. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the perception of patients attending the Outpatient Department (OPD) at Civil Hospital, Nurpur, Himachal Pradesh, regarding the importance of the Pathology Department. Material and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted between January 2023- April 2023 among patients attending civil hospital Nurpur, Himachal Pradesh and selected by convenience sampling technique. Data was collected through face-to-face interview using a semi-structured questionnaire. Data was analyzed using epi info v7 software using appropriate statistical tests. Results: A total of 400 respondents including 248 (62%) male patients and 152 (38%) female patients were participated in the study. Among the total, 111 (27.75%) were from urban area and 289 (72.25%) were from rural area. In the present study 20.5% (82) participants had very good knowledge (16-20 marks) towards importance of the Pathology Department , 39% (156) had good knowledge (12-15 marks), 27.25% (109) had fair knowledge  (8-11 marks) and 13.25% (53) having poor knowledge  (<8 marks). Conclusion: Overall, a majority of the patients recognized the significance of pathology services in their healthcare journey. By addressing patient awareness, understanding, and satisfaction with pathology services, healthcare providers and policymakers can enhance patient engagement, adherence to treatment plans, and overall healthcare outcomes.

INTRODUCTION

Pathology plays a critical role in healthcare by providing essential diagnostic information that guides medical decisions and patient management. The Pathology Department is responsible for the examination and analysis of various specimens, including tissues, blood, and body fluids, to identify the underlying causes of diseases. This department is vital for accurate disease diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring of patient progress [1-5].

The perception of patients regarding the importance of the Pathology Department plays a pivotal role in healthcare delivery. Understanding patient perception is essential as it influences patient satisfaction, compliance with treatment, and overall healthcare outcomes. Positive patient perception can foster trust, engagement, and active participation in the decision-making process. Conversely, negative perceptions may lead to dissatisfaction, non-compliance, and suboptimal utilization of healthcare services. However, patient perception regarding the importance and role of the Pathology Department in their healthcare journey is not extensively studied [6-11].

The present study aims to assess the perception of patients attending the Outpatient Department (OPD) at Civil Hospital, Nurpur, Himachal Pradesh, regarding the importance of the Pathology Department. By exploring patient perceptions, the study intends to identify areas for improvement and address any gaps in service delivery. The findings will contribute to enhancing patient experience and optimizing the quality of care provided by the Pathology Department.

DISCUSSION

The present study aimed to assess the perception of patients attending the Outpatient Department (OPD) at Civil Hospital, Nurpur, Himachal Pradesh, regarding the importance of the Pathology Department. Understanding patient perceptions is crucial as it can influence healthcare-seeking behavior, patient satisfaction, and overall healthcare outcomes.

The study findings revealed valuable insights into patient perceptions regarding the importance of the Pathology Department. Overall, a majority of the patients recognized the significance of pathology services in their healthcare journey. They acknowledged the crucial role of the Pathology Department in disease diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient management.

These findings are consistent with previous studies that have highlighted the importance of pathology in healthcare. Pathology plays a vital role in accurate disease diagnosis, prognosis determination, and monitoring treatment response [11,12]. It provides valuable information for personalized medicine, as specific molecular markers identified through pathology testing can guide targeted therapies [12,13]. Furthermore, pathology contributes to the understanding of disease patterns and trends through epidemiological studies [13,14].

Patient awareness and understanding of pathology services are essential for effective communication between healthcare providers and patients. Improved patient education and engagement regarding pathology can lead to better adherence to treatment plans and overall healthcare outcomes. Studies have shown that enhancing patient knowledge and involvement in decision-making can improve treatment adherence, patient satisfaction, and health outcomes [14-16].

However, the present study also identified areas where patient awareness and understanding could be improved. A minority of patients expressed limited knowledge about the specific roles and functions of the Pathology Department. This suggests a need for targeted patient education programs to enhance understanding and appreciation of pathology services. By addressing these knowledge gaps, patients can become active partners in their own healthcare, leading to better treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Furthermore, patient satisfaction with pathology services is an important aspect to consider. Positive patient experiences and satisfaction contribute to better healthcare outcomes and patient compliance with recommended treatments. Previous studies have shown that patient satisfaction with pathology services positively impacts overall patient satisfaction with healthcare providers and institutions [14-16]. Therefore, efforts to improve patient experiences in the Pathology Department, such as reducing wait times, enhancing communication, and ensuring accurate and timely reporting of results, can positively influence patient perceptions and satisfaction.

The findings of this study have implications for healthcare providers, policymakers, and administrators. Enhancing patient education and awareness about the importance of pathology services should be prioritized through targeted interventions. This can be achieved through patient information leaflets, educational sessions, and interactive platforms that provide clear and accessible information about pathology and its role in healthcare.

Limitations

Limitations of the study include the cross-sectional design, which limits the establishment of causality. Additionally, the study was conducted at a single hospital in a specific region, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Future research could explore patient perceptions in a larger sample and across multiple healthcare settings to obtain a broader understanding of patient perspectives on the importance of pathology.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this study shed light on patient perceptions regarding the importance of the Pathology Department at Civil Hospital, Nurpur, Himachal Pradesh. The findings underscored the crucial role of pathology in disease diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient management. By addressing patient awareness, understanding, and satisfaction with pathology services, healthcare providers and policymakers can enhance patient engagement, adherence to treatment plans, and overall healthcare outcomes.
