INTRODUCTION

In light of the rapid transformations in the modern business environment, knowledge management has become an essential element for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of corporate operations. Knowledge management is considered one of the fundamental pillars of achieving competitive advantage by improving the utilization of data, information, and expertise within the organization [1]. The importance of knowledge management lies in improving the decision-making process and enabling organizations to better utilize their expertise and knowledge, which contributes to reducing costs, increasing profits, and meeting the needs of beneficiaries [2]. Knowledge management also includes the processes of identifying, acquiring, generating, storing, distributing, and applying knowledge [3,4].

Knowledge management in Saudi service organizations plays a fundamental role in improving performance efficiency and providing value-added services [5]. Studies indicate that knowledge management contributes to improving supply chain operations by enhancing strategic relationships with suppliers and enhancing problem-solving capabilities [6,7]. Supply chains are a vital component of organizational efficiency, encompassing the planning, manufacturing, delivery, and returns phases. Achieving efficiency in these chains represents a fundamental change in business management [8].

Ports in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are a cornerstone of international trade, providing direct links between different transportation systems, enhancing the integration  of   trade   chains.   Saudi   authorities   seek to effectively manage ports to ensure maximum operational efficiency [9]. Recognizing the importance of the logistics sector within the Kingdom's Vision 2030, the Ministry of Transport and Logistics has launched strategies to develop this sector, enhance operational efficiency, and improve performance [10]. Within this framework, the current study aims to identify the role of knowledge management in improving the efficiency of supply chain operations at Jeddah Islamic Port, focusing on leveraging knowledge management to enhance operational effectiveness in this context.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Research Problem

In light of the increasing challenges facing service organizations recently, knowledge management processes have become an essential element for achieving efficiency and effectiveness in various practices. However, research shows that the reality in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia does not reflect this necessity as hoped. For example, Bin Samhan's [11] study demonstrated shortcomings in the application of knowledge management, particularly with regard to the availability and use of information sources for problem-solving in some service organizations. Al-Mu'tani's [12] study also noted a lack of application of knowledge concepts in reporting within service organizations, as well as challenges in organizing, storing, generating, and sharing knowledge effectively. Regarding ports, which are part of service organizations, Abdul Karim et al. [13] study revealed significant difficulties in keeping pace with technological developments in information systems, which increases errors and delays in shipping operations. This shortcoming has directly impacted the efficiency of supply chain operations. Kadasa et al. [14] study found that the degree of supply chain implementation in companies in the western region of the Kingdom was moderate, indicating the need for clear strategies and supply chain management systems.

Reliance on traditional methods in logistics, transportation, and warehousing operations has led to a deterioration in supply chain efficiency. The lack of information and knowledge and weak communication systems contribute to delays in meeting production requirements, which reinforces the need to improve operational efficiency by enhancing the availability of necessary information and knowledge in line with Saudi Vision 2030 [15]. Based on the above, the need for effective knowledge management strategies to improve the efficiency of supply chain operations in service organizations, particularly at the Jeddah Islamic Port, is evident.

Hence, the main question of the study can be formulated: What is the role of knowledge management in improving the efficiency of supply chain operations in service organizations, with a focus on the Jeddah Islamic Port in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia? From this, the following sub-questions branch out:

  • What is the role of knowledge diagnosis in improving the efficiency of supply chain operations at the Jeddah Islamic Port?

  • What is the role of knowledge generation in improving the efficiency of supply chain operations at the Jeddah Islamic Port?

  • What is the role of knowledge storage in improving the efficiency of supply chain operations at the Jeddah Islamic Port?

  • What is the role of knowledge distribution in improving the efficiency of supply chain operations at the Jeddah Islamic Port?

  • What is the role of knowledge application in improving the efficiency of supply chain operations at the Jeddah Islamic Port?

The study can provide data and insights that support the government's efforts to develop the logistics sector within the Kingdom's Vision 2030, particularly with regard to knowledge management

Theoretical Framework

First: Knowledge Management: In the current era, scientific capabilities and knowledge have become essential factors for excellence and competition, as knowledge brings about rapid changes in all economic, social, political, and cultural fields [16]. As a result of the rapid expansion of information, the lack of information is no longer the problem; rather, dealing with the vast amount of information and modern technologies for transmitting and storing information has become the greatest challenge [1]. Therefore, modern organizations aim to achieve efficiency and effectiveness through knowledge management, which enables them to exploit tacit and explicit knowledge to achieve their goals and ensure its continuity [17].

The Importance of Knowledge Management

Knowledge management is considered one of the key factors for organizational success, as it contributes to organizing and coordinating the exchange of expertise and information, facilitating access and use when needed. Knowledge management enhances performance, innovation, and productivity, supports continuous learning and decision-making, and contributes to the development of human capital and the building of an organizational culture based on collaboration and shared knowledge [18]. It is also an essential component of organizational success, enhancing productivity and operational efficiency, and equipping individuals with problem-solving and collaboration skills. It also helps organize unstructured information and experiences, leading to effective problem-solving, dynamic learning, strategic planning, and decision-making [19].

The Role of Knowledge Management in Service Organizations

Knowledge management plays a vital role in service organizations, facilitating knowledge sharing and improving service performance. Its primary mission is to organize the knowledge needed to address complex challenges in service environments, enhancing operational efficiency and customer experience. Knowledge management also contributes to building an institutional memory that enhances strategic decision-making and supports innovation and continuous development [20].

Knowledge management is an integrated system that enhances operational efficiency, improves customer experience, and helps organizations compete effectively in the market and address challenges (Hosseini et al., 2019, p. 16). Its most prominent roles include: raising levels of creativity in service organizations, providing an appropriate environment for creativity and improving competitiveness, generating new knowledge and providing distinguished services, and supporting innovation through knowledge management strategies and positive management practices [21].

The role of knowledge management in improving the efficiency of supply chain operations in service organizations

Knowledge management plays a crucial role in improving performance efficiency within organizations, as it seeks to organize and utilize knowledge in effective and systematic ways. Knowledge management is a comprehensive system that aims to collect, store, and share knowledge and expertise, enhancing the organization's ability to make informed decisions and contributing to improving the quality of organizational performance [22]. Improving performance efficiency, in turn, significantly impacts supply chain management. Internal performance includes improved yields and production times, while external performance impacts customer satisfaction and increased sales. Logistics performance efficiency contributes to reduced costs, improved warehousing, and the provision of appropriate services, which supports the effectiveness of supply chain management [23,24].

Second: Supply Chain Management Processes

Supply chains are an essential component of today's business world, linking suppliers and consumers in an integrated supply chain. Supply chain management is a cornerstone of ensuring the smooth flow of materials and services, requiring careful planning and effective coordination among stakeholders to ensure efficiency, sustainability, and reliable meeting of market needs [25]. As businesses have evolved, organizations have shifted from relying on their internal components to adopting the concept of multiple supply chains. This shift reflects changes in the external environment and competitive pressures, and calls for meticulous supply chain management to achieve objectives effectively and sustainably Shaheen [24].

The Importance of Supply Chains

Supply chains are a vital component for any organization in a competitive and changing market, ensuring a smooth and efficient flow of resources and services from suppliers to customers. Supply chains contribute to cost efficiency, improved product quality, and increased customer satisfaction. They also help narrow the gap between supply and demand and enhance the ability to adapt to rapid changes in the market and customer requirements. Supply chain management is considered a strategic key to achieving competitive advantage and business sustainability [28]. The importance of supply chains is demonstrated by enhancing connectivity between developed and emerging economies and accelerating trade between countries, which contributes to reducing costs and increasing the effectiveness of access to global markets [14].

The Impact of Supply Chains on Service Organizations

Supply chain management is one of the most valuable ways to improve the performance of service organizations and increase their competitive advantage in the face of intense competition in this field. Global pressures have become necessary to provide the right products and services at the right time and place, requiring service organizations to adopt supply chain management concepts and practices to increase profitability and competitive advantage [28]. Strong supply chains are a key means of achieving competitive advantage and improving organizational performance. Competition in today's marketplace extends beyond organizations to include supply chains themselves. Higher levels of supply chain management practices can enhance competitive advantage and improve organizational performance, which has a direct positive impact on performance [29]. Supply chains can contribute to the effective performance and growth of service organizations, leading to improved organizational performance levels. Service organizations must adopt supply chain management processes to achieve better performance, meet customer needs at competitive prices, and ensure the delivery of products of the highest quality, at the lowest cost, and on time [30].

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The following results were obtained:

The role of knowledge management (knowledge generation and sharing) in improving the efficiency of supply chain operations in service organizations (Jeddah Islamic Port in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) was found to be significant, with an arithmetic mean of 4.01, a standard deviation of 0.359, and a high response rate.

Figure 1 shows that the overall average for the first axis: The Role of Knowledge Management (Knowledge Generation and Sharing) in Improving the Efficiency of Supply Chain Operations in Service Organizations (Jeddah Islamic Port in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) had an arithmetic mean of (4.01), a standard deviation of (0.359), and a response rate of (high). The overall average score for the first axis: The role of knowledge management (knowledge generation and sharing) in improving the efficiency of supply chain operations in service organizations (Jeddah Islamic Port in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) can be explained by the effectiveness and importance of the role of knowledge management (knowledge generation and sharing) in improving the efficiency of supply chain operations in service organizations (Jeddah Islamic Port in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia). This may be due to the effective sharing of knowledge through continuous training. Comprehensive and targeted training programs were implemented to enhance the generation and sharing of employees’ skills and knowledge in various aspects of knowledge management, including techniques, processes, and best practices, and continuous knowledge generation. Various platforms and initiatives were created to facilitate knowledge sharing and exchange among employees, which  led  to  the  promotion of  a  culture   of  continuous

learning. This was also supported by strong leadership, as senior management demonstrated a strong commitment to knowledge management and supported the allocation of the necessary resources to ensure successful implementation. This is consistent with the results of the study by Sangari et al. [8], which indicated a positive relationship between knowledge management processes of generation and sharing and the performance of supply chain operations (planning, sourcing, manufacturing, and delivery). He also agreed with Al-Salmi [31], which indicated that there is a direct, statistically significant positive impact of knowledge management on improving supply chain practices in Saudi industrial companies.

  • The role of knowledge management (research and development and knowledge storage) in improving the efficiency of supply chain operations in service organizations (Jeddah Islamic Port in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) was found to be significant, with an arithmetic mean of 3.85, a standard deviation of 0.487, and a high response rate.

Figure 2 shows that the overall average for the second axis: The Role of Knowledge Management (Research and Development and Knowledge Storage) in Improving the Efficiency of Supply Chain Operations in Service Organizations (Jeddah Islamic Port in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) came in at an arithmetic mean of (3.85), a standard deviation of (0.487), and a response rate of (high). The overall average for the second axis: The role of knowledge management (R&D and knowledge storage) in improving the efficiency of supply chain operations  in  service    organizations    (Jeddah    Islamic    Port    in    the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) can be explained by a (high) response score to investment in R&D and knowledge storage. Jeddah Islamic Port has allocated significant resources to R&D and storage, focusing on innovations that would improve supply chain efficiency, and cooperation with universities and research centers. Jeddah Islamic Port has established partnerships with universities and research centers to develop new technologies and innovative solutions, and internal research initiatives. The port has established an internal R&D and storage department to focus on improving internal operations and developing new products and services, as well as disseminating results. R&D and knowledge storage results have been widely disseminated through publications and conferences, contributing to general knowledge in the field of supply chain management. This result is consistent with the study Bin Dost and Rehman, which concluded that knowledge management processes, including knowledge storage, have a positive impact on improving the efficiency of supply chain operations in companies. It also showed that knowledge management processes have enhanced the efficiency of supply chain performance in resource utilization. Warehousing, manufacturing, and productivity rates. Knowledge management also enhanced the supply chain's ability to respond and adapt to market fluctuations, increasing the supply chain's ability to meet customer requirements in the shortest possible time, without product delays, and without delivery errors. Bahar et al. [33] found a positive impact of knowledge management capabilities represented by knowledge storage on improving managers' ability to exploit organizational knowledge, and improving coordination and information exchange between customers and suppliers during supply chain operations in the logistics services sector.

Conclusions

Based on the systematic analysis of the aforementioned previous studies, the researcher was able to answer the main research question, which revolves around the role of knowledge management in improving the efficiency of supply chain operations in service organizations, with a focus on the Jeddah Islamic Port in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The results of the systematic analysis of previous studies demonstrated the importance and effectiveness of knowledge management in improving the efficiency of supply chain operations in service organizations. They also demonstrated a statistically significant direct positive effect of knowledge management on improving supply chain practices in service organizations. They also demonstrated a positive relationship between knowledge management processes as a whole and supply chain efficiency. This is consistent with the results of Al-Salmi [31] and Nazir et al. [35]. This may be attributed to the fact that supply chain operations in service organizations, such as the Jeddah Islamic Port, require a high level of coordination and cooperation between various departments and divisions. Knowledge management also relies on the collection, storage, and distribution of knowledge and expertise within the organization, enabling employees to access the information necessary to make informed decisions. Furthermore, by providing a central platform For knowledge, knowledge management can improve communication and reduce barriers between departments, leading to more efficient supply chain operations.

Studies have also shown that organizations with effective knowledge management have better supply chain performance than those without. For example, a study conducted by Michigan State University found that companies that implemented knowledge management experienced a 20% reduction in supply chain costs and a 15% improvement in service quality.

Recommendations
