Mastering the Art and Science of Anesthesia: Assessing Knowledge and Proficiency in Anesthesia Induction and Maintenance Among Anesthesia Residents in Himachal Pradesh
Background: Anesthesia, bridging medical artistry and scientific precision, is indispensable for safe surgical care. In the serene landscapes of Himachal Pradesh, Resident Anesthetists play a vital role in orchestrating this delicate balance between consciousness and unconsciousness, pain and comfort, life and surgery. Anesthesia induction and maintenance form the core of this practice, requiring meticulous drug administration, dosage control, and vigilant monitoring. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Himachal Pradesh from April to June 2023. A sample of 100 Junior and Senior Residents of Anesthesia in medical colleges participated. A Google Form questionnaire, encompassing socio-demographic details and 20 knowledge-related questions regarding anesthesia induction and maintenance, was utilized. Data were analyzed using Epi Info V7 Software. Results: The majority exhibited strong knowledge of anesthesia induction objectives and preoperative assessment, with 22 participants rated as "very good." However, there was scope for improving the understanding of rapid sequence induction and anesthesia depth assessment. In the maintenance phase, participants demonstrated familiarity with balanced anesthesia, monitoring neuromuscular blockade, and managing drug allergies. Yet, there was room for strengthening knowledge in areas like drug dosage calculation and controlled ventilation principles. Conclusion: This study highlights varying levels of knowledge among Resident Anesthetists in Himachal Pradesh, emphasizing the need for continuous education and training. Enhancing proficiency in anesthesia induction and maintenance can optimize patient care and safety.
