Sleep is a vital component of human health, significantly impacting overall well-being. Understanding sleep patterns and quality is crucial, as they are linked to numerous health outcomes. This study aimed to assess the awareness and knowledge of sleep patterns and quality among residents of District Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, India, and to contextualize these findings in the existing literature. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between May and July 2023, involving 400 adults residing in urban (62.75%) and rural (37.25%) areas of District Bilaspur. A structured questionnaire encompassing socio-demographic information and 20 questions related to sleep patterns and quality was administered. The responses were analyzed, and knowledge scores were categorized as very good, good, fair, or poor based on correct answers. Results: The study revealed varied levels of awareness and knowledge among participants. Approximately half were aware of recommended sleep duration (51.5%) and the impact of stress on sleep quality (72.75%). More than half recognized factors negatively affecting sleep (53.75%) and different sleep disorders (58.5%). However, fewer were familiar with the stages of sleep (24.5%) and sleep hygiene practices (25.75%). The majority understood the importance of good sleep for overall health (70.75%). Conclusion: This study highlights both strengths and areas for improvement in sleep awareness and knowledge among District Bilaspur residents. While there is considerable awareness of certain sleep-related aspects, opportunities exist for enhancing understanding, particularly regarding sleep stages and hygiene practices. These findings can inform tailored interventions and public health initiatives aimed at promoting healthy sleep patterns and quality, ultimately contributing to improved well-being in the community.
Sleep is an essential component of human life, and the quality of our sleep profoundly influences our overall health and well-being. It is during sleep that our bodies undergo critical processes of restoration, memory consolidation, and emotional regulation, making it a cornerstone of good health. However, sleep patterns and quality are subject to various factors, and disturbances in these aspects can have far-reaching consequences for individuals and communities [1-5].
In recent years, there has been growing recognition of the importance of understanding sleep patterns and quality, not only from a personal health perspective but also as a public health concern. Poor sleep quality has been associated with a myriad of health issues, including cardiovascular diseases, obesity, diabetes, and mental health disorders. Additionally, disrupted sleep patterns can impair cognitive function, decrease productivity, and even lead to accidents [6-10].
Bilaspur, a district nestled in the picturesque state of Himachal Pradesh, India, is known for its serene landscapes and cultural richness. Yet, like any community, the residents of Bilaspur are not exempt from the challenges of modern living, which can impact their sleep patterns and quality. Factors such as work-related stress, lifestyle choices, environmental conditions, and access to healthcare services can all influence sleep in this region.
The study of sleep patterns and quality in Bilaspur holds significance on multiple fronts. Firstly, it empowers individuals with an understanding of the factors that affect their sleep, helping them make informed choices to improve their sleep quality. Secondly, it provides insights into the prevalence of sleep-related issues in the community, thereby informing public health initiatives and interventions. Lastly, it allows for a comprehensive assessment of the region's unique challenges and opportunities related to sleep health.
As sleep patterns and quality can vary significantly between regions and populations, conducting a study specific to Bilaspur is essential to capture the nuances and idiosyncrasies of this community. This research aims to gauge the levels of awareness and knowledge about sleep patterns and quality among the general population of District Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. By shedding light on the existing awareness gaps and strengths, this study seeks to inform strategies for improving sleep health and overall well-being in this region.
Objectives of the Study
The objective of this study is to gauge the levels of awareness and knowledge about sleep patterns and quality among the general population of District Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh.
Research Approach: Descriptive
Research Design: Cross-sectional survey design
Study Area: District Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh
Study Duration: Between May 2023 to July 2023
Study Population: The study's target population encompassed all adults aged 18 and above who had been residents of District Bilaspur for a minimum of 12 months
Sample Size: A robust sample size of 400 adults was determined using a 95% confidence level, an estimated knowledge level of 50% regarding Sleep Patterns and Quality , a precise 5% absolute error margin, and a conservative 5% non-response rate.
Study tool: A google form questionnaire consisting of questions regarding socio-demography and knowledge regarding Sleep Patterns and Quality was created. The questionnaire was initially pre-tested on a small number of participants to identify any difficulty in understanding by the respondents.
Description of Tool : Demographic data survey instrument: The demographic form elicited information on participants’ background: age, marital status, religion, employment, education and many more.
Questionnaire: The questionnaire contains 20 structured knowledge related questions regarding Sleep Patterns and Quality. One mark was given for each correct answer and zero for incorrect answer. The maximum score was 20 and minimum score was zero. Scoring was done on the basis of marks as >80%(16-20)=very good,60-79%(12-15) =Good,41-59% ( 8-11)=Fair,<40% (< 8)=poor
Validity of Tool: By the experts in this field
Data Collection: Data was collected under the guidance of supervisors. The google form questionnaire was circulated among the residents of District Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh for responses using online modes like e-mail and social media platforms like Whatsapp groups, Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin till the 400 responses were collected.
Data Analysis: Data was collected and entered in Microsoft excel spread sheet, cleaned for errors and analyzed with Epi Info V7 Software with appropriate statistical test in terms of frequencies and percentage.
Ethical Considerations: Participants confidentiality and anonymity was maintained.
The primary objective of this study was to gauge the understanding of Sleep Patterns and Quality among the general population of District Bilaspur. A total of 400 participants took part in the study, with 251 (62.75%) residing in urban areas and 149 (37.25%) in rural areas.
In the present study 23% (92) participants had very good knowledge (16-20 marks) towards SleepPatterns.

Sleep is a fundamental pillar of human health and well-being, and understanding sleep patterns and quality is crucial for both individual and public health. This discussion delves into the findings of our study, which aimed to gauge the levels of awareness and knowledge about sleep patterns and quality among the general population of District Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. These findings are contextualized with reference to relevant literature, shedding light on the unique aspects of sleep in this region.
Approximately half of the participants (51.5%) reported knowledge about the recommended duration of sleep for adults. This understanding is fundamental as it helps individuals gauge their own sleep needs and set appropriate sleep goals. A significant proportion (43.5%) acknowledged experiencing difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. Sleep initiation and maintenance difficulties can be indicative of underlying sleep disorders or lifestyle factors affecting sleep. A notable number (35.5%) had heard of the term "circadian rhythm." Understanding circadian rhythms is vital as they regulate the sleep-wake cycle and influence sleep quality. A quarter of the participants (24.5%) could describe the different stages of sleep. Awareness of these stages contributes to a deeper comprehension of sleep architecture and its role in restorative processes [7-10].
More than half (53.75%) recognized factors and habits that can negatively affect sleep quality. Identifying these factors is pivotal for making necessary lifestyle adjustments to improve sleep.A substantial majority (58.5%) was aware of sleep disorders like insomnia, sleep apnea, or restless leg syndrome. Recognizing these disorders is essential for early diagnosis and intervention. An overwhelming percentage (72.75%) believed that stress and anxiety can impact sleep quality. Stress management strategies can play a pivotal role in addressing sleep disturbances [11-14].
A significant number (75.25%) was aware of the potential health consequences of chronic sleep deprivation. This awareness underscores the significance of prioritizing adequate sleep for overall health. Nearly half (45.25%) reported following a consistent sleep schedule, which is beneficial for regulating the body's internal clock.About a third (31.5%) had used sleep aids or medications, indicating their awareness of available interventions for sleep-related issues.A substantial majority (70.25%) believed that physical activity could affect sleep patterns. Regular exercise is known to promote better sleep, and this understanding can motivate individuals to stay active [15-19].
Nearly half (44.5%) recognized the potential impact of caffeine and alcohol consumption on sleep quality. Managing the timing of consumption can mitigate these effects. A quarter (25.75%) were familiar with the concept of "sleep hygiene" and its associated practices. Incorporating these practices can enhance sleep quality. A fifth (20.25%) understood the term "sleep debt," which signifies the cumulative effects of insufficient sleep. Acknowledging sleep debt can motivate individuals to prioritize sleep [16-19].
A significant percentage (40.75%) reported experiencing sleep paralysis or vivid dreams that disrupt their sleep. These experiences can be indicative of sleep disorders and warrant attention. A majority (71%) recognized the potential impact of electronic devices on sleep quality. Managing screen time before bedtime is essential for better sleep. A quarter (26%) were aware of local or cultural practices in Himachal Pradesh related to sleep and bedtime routines, highlighting the influence of cultural factors on sleep. A portion (17.75%) had sought professional help for sleep-related issues, indicating their proactive approach to addressing sleep disturbances. An overwhelming majority (70.75%) understood the importance of good sleep for overall health and well-being, emphasizing the awareness of sleep's role in maintaining health [18-22].
Comparing these findings with studies conducted in other regions, it is evident that the levels of awareness and knowledge about sleep patterns and quality can vary among different populations [17-22]. The residents of District Bilaspur exhibit a reasonable understanding of various aspects of sleep, including its importance, sleep disorders, and factors influencing sleep quality.
In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the levels of awareness and knowledge about sleep patterns and quality among the residents of District Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. While there is a commendable awareness of several sleep-related aspects, there are also opportunities for improvement, particularly in areas such as understanding the stages of sleep and sleep hygiene practices.
These findings can serve as a foundation for tailored interventions, educational programs, and public health initiatives aimed at enhancing sleep patterns and quality for the residents of Bilaspur. By addressing existing gaps in knowledge and promoting healthy sleep practices, this research contributes to improved sleep health and overall well-being in the community.
