Knowledge and awareness regarding Risk factors and warning signs of oral and thyroid cancer: A survey among the patients attending outpatient department of Civil hospital Jogindernagar, Himachal Pradesh
Background: Oral and thyroid cancers are significant public health concerns globally. These cancers can have severe consequences on individuals' health, quality of life and overall survival. This research aims to assess the knowledge and awareness regarding the risk factors and warning signs of oral and thyroid cancers among patients attending the outpatient department of Civil Hospital Jogindernagar, situated in Himachal Pradesh, India. Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted between January 2023-April 2023 among the patients attending civil hospital Jogindernagar, Himachal Pradesh and selected by convenience sampling technique. Data was collected through face-to-face interview using a semi-structured questionnaire. Data was analyzed using epi info v7 software using appropriate statistical tests. Results: A total of 400 respondents including 248 (62%) male patients and 152 (38%) female patients were participated in the study. Among the total, 111 (27.75%) were from urban area and 289 (72.25%) were from rural area. In the present study 29.25% (117) participants had very good knowledge (16-20 marks) towards the risk factors and warning signs of oral and thyroid cancers, 33.5% (134) had good knowledge (12-15 marks), 21.75%(87) had fair knowledge (8-11 marks) and 15.5% (62) having poor knowledge (<8 marks). Conclusion: The present study findings revealed a mixed level of knowledge among the participants, with a significant proportion demonstrating very good and good knowledge. However, a notable proportion still exhibited fair and poor knowledge, indicating the need for continued patient education initiatives to address knowledge gaps and improve understanding.
