Women empowerment has been a major agenda all over the world for times immemorial. Time and again efforts have been made to empower women socially, economically as well as politically. In India, gender equality has been enshrined in the Indian Constitution in its Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and Directive Principles of State Policy. Since Independence, the Legislature, Executive as well as the Judiciary have made attempts to safeguard and empower the women workers of both organised and unorganised sector. The sole purpose has been empowerment of women so that they can live with peace and dignity. But these attempts have turned out to be difficult to fulfil their purpose because of the various complexities in law and policy, however for easy implementation at grass root level the Government of India has come up with various schemes targeting the working group for better results. In this paper, it has been observed that there is a need to sensitize and enlighten the whole society so that discrimination of all kinds towards working women in all sectors is eliminated. In the present paper, an attempt has also been made to bring forth the measures taken up by the government by way of different schemes to provide humane conditions of living for working women. The paper highlights the importance of women employment and their empowerment as important aspects in development of a nation in general and women in particular. The paper will also give a glance into how law and justice system in India shifts in the globalising world.
