Abstract

This study examined the influence of technological innovation on the performance of commercial banks in Kenya within the framework of strategic financial management. Strategic financial management serves as a blueprint for directing financial decision-making to enhance shareholder value, yet limited research has analyzed how it integrates with technological innovation to improve competitiveness. The study adopted an inferential approach to test the hypothesis that technological innovation has no significant effect on the performance of commercial banks in Kenya. Empirical findings revealed a significant positive relationship between technological innovation and performance (R = 0.671, p = 0.000), with technological advancements accounting for 45.1% of the variance in bank performance (R² = 0.451). The t-test results (t = 2.883; p = 0.005 < 0.05) and standardized coefficient (β₁ = 0.234) further confirmed that technological innovation significantly enhances performance outcomes. The study concluded that commercial banks in Kenya have embraced innovations such as electronic platforms, national payment systems, and artificial intelligence technologies, which have improved transaction security, reduced operational costs, and enhanced competitiveness. It recommends that banks continue adopting and upgrading innovative technologies to optimize efficiency, while financial regulators establish supportive frameworks that promote innovation and safeguard system integrity.
